Reflecting on the journey so far and ahead – Girl Up Nigeria commemorates 2 years of impact and action

Girl Up Nigeria is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization founded on the 14th of July, 2020, in alignment with the Girl Up campaign under the United Nations Foundation. Girl Up Nigeria unites girls and women to take sustainable actions in changing the world, starting from their communities, without leaving the male gender behind. As an adopted initiative by Bays Planet Foundation, we have developed projects around climate change, gender-based violence, child education, ending harmful traditional practices for women and girls, and education on civic and legal rights for its members and the public.

With impact reach currently measured at over 9,500, Girl Up Nigeria is leveraging the digital platforms to drive social actions aside from onsite and community activities. In the last two years, Girl Up Nigeria has been engaged by and partnered with over 30 organizations, over 20 Executive Volunteers, over 45 resource persons, and over 350 community members. 

To commemorate the two years milestone, Girl Up Nigeria is hosting a virtual event on the 16th of July, 2022. This year, H.E, Amb. Dr Mrs Olufolake Abdulrazaq, First Lady, Kwara State; Rotimi Olawale, ED, YouthHubAfrica are the Guest Speakers, while Mr Crystal Ikanih-Musa, Malala Fund’s Regional Advocacy Manager, Africa, is the Keynote Speaker.

The panelists for the day are Tunde Onakoya, Founder, Chess In Slums Initiative, Elizabeth Talatu Williams, Founder and Executive Director, Sustainable Impact and Development Initiative (SID), Elvis Okolie, a Public Health Specialist, Hon. Abiodun Essiet,  Special Assistant on ICT/ Civil Societies and Donor Agencies to the Chairman of AMAC, Abuja. Miss Truth Osumareton Egbe – 2020/2021 Girl Up Nigeria’s Communications Officer will be the Panel Moderator.

During the anniversary ceremony, Karimot Odebode will perform one of her poems while Serah Akojenu and Alaafin Kaosarat will share their experience and growth as two of the International Women’s Day mentorship program beneficiaries.

With over 150 virtual attendees, this year’s theme will focus on “Our Leadership Power Towards Sustainable Development” and a series of topics.
