The International Day of Education is celebrated worldwide every 24th day of January. International Day of Education is an occasion to educate the public on issues of illiteracy to advance Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), and ensure inclusive & equitable quality education to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, equally to mobilize political will, and resources to address global educational problems and to celebrate and reinforce achievements to humanity.

In Nigeria, about 20 million children are out of school, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Compared with UNICEF’s 2020 figure of 10.5 million, this is a huge increase. Several factors contribute to school dropouts in our school system, including poverty, ignorance, poor school conditions, bullying, school phobias, academic problems, etc.

In light of commemorating this year’s International Day of Education, Girl Up Nigeria is hosting a Webinar to spark up more conversations for people to take action, on the topic “Education as a Means of Human Capital Investment”.

This is part of our effort to celebrate winners of our #IDE2023 Essay competition with the topic focus: “Effective Strategies on how the Government and Stakeholders can curb the number of out-of-school Children in Nigeria”
